How to Temporarily Support a Load-Bearing Wall (Safe Method)

Between the moment a load-bearing wall comes out and the moment the new beam takes over, something has to hold up the ceiling. That "something" is temporary support, also called shoring. In simple terms: temporary walls or adjustable steel posts are set up on both sides of the wall, tightened against the ceiling to carry the load, and only removed once the permanent beam is in place and bearing. Getting this right is the single most safety-critical part of any wall removal.

What temporary support does

When you remove a structural wall, the floor or roof above loses its support until the permanent beam is installed and bearing. Temporary support carries that load in the meantime, preventing sagging, cracking, or sudden movement while the work happens.

How it's done

  • Temporary stud walls: a framed wall built a few feet to each side of the wall being removed, wedged tight to the ceiling to pick up the load.
  • Adjustable steel props (shoring posts): heavy-duty jacks placed under a strongback beam to hold the ceiling.
  • Strongbacks / needle beams: temporary beams that spread the load across multiple support points.

The supports must land on something that can carry the load all the way down — not just on a floor that itself needs support. This is exactly the kind of detail that separates a safe job from a dangerous one.

This is not a DIY step. Under-supporting — or placing supports in the wrong spot — can cause the very failure you’re trying to prevent. Temporary shoring should follow the engineer’s plan and be built by experienced crews.

The sequence

  • Temporary support is installed on both sides of the wall — set up parallel to the wall, tightened against the ceiling to pick up the joists, and standing on solid bearing.
  • The wall is removed while the shoring holds the load — this is also when hidden wiring, plumbing or ducts are found and rerouted.
  • The permanent beam and posts are installed — positioned exactly per the stamped drawings, with posts landing on a path down to a footing.
  • The load is transferred onto the new beam — brought tight to the joists and fastened with the engineered connections.
  • The temporary support is removed — only after the beam is fully bearing, with the opening checked for movement.

Why both sides of the wall?

The joists above usually rest on the wall from both directions, so each side needs its own support. Shoring only one side leaves half the load hanging the moment the wall comes out. This is one of the most common mistakes in DIY attempts — and one of the reasons shoring belongs in professional hands.

Why placement is engineering, not guesswork

Where the shoring stands matters as much as how strong it is. Temporary walls are typically placed a short distance back from the wall being removed — close enough to pick up the joists before they can sag, far enough to leave working room for the crew and the beam. The load on the shoring also has to travel somewhere: if the temporary supports stand on a bouncy mid-span floor rather than over a solid bearing, the “support” is standing on something that itself needs support. On many jobs, that means shoring extends down into the basement so the load path remains solid from roof to footing throughout the operation.

Special situations that need extra care

  • Two-storey loads: when the wall carries a second floor plus the roof, the shoring must carry far more weight, and both levels may need support during the work.
  • Older GTA homes: century homes often have undersized or altered framing, plaster ceilings that crack easily, and floors that have already settled — all reasons to shore conservatively.
  • Long openings: a wide removal means more joists hanging on the temporary system at once, so the shoring itself is beefier and more carefully spaced.
  • Occupied homes: when the family stays during the work, the shoring zone is barricaded — the temporary structure is doing a serious job and isn’t something to lean furniture against.

Warning signs shoring wasn't done right

  • New cracks appearing in the drywall or ceiling above the opening during or after the work.
  • Doors upstairs suddenly sticking or swinging on their own — a sign the floor above has shifted.
  • A visible dip or sag in the ceiling line where the wall used to be.

If you spot any of these on a past renovation, have the structure assessed. Small movement caught early is far cheaper to fix than a failed beam.
